Respect is defined as a positive feeling of esteem for a person or entity. It is shown by an individual towards others. One very important quality is to respect others.
We can say that respect seems like a boomerang in the sense that you must send it out before it will come back to you. Respect cannot be demanded or forced, though sometimes people mistakenly believe that it can be commanded. It is an asset that has to be earned.
There are many problems we face today as a society which seem to become more and more overwhelming. I believe that respect for one other is a big social issue we face today in our generation of tomorrow. We see this problem in teens, in so many places. Many people have forgotten how to respect others.
Respect by Behaviour : Respect can be shown through behaviour and it can also be felt. We can act in ways which are considered respectful. It is possible to act in ways that do not reflect how we really feel. When the feeling is there, the behaviour will naturally follow.
Importance of respect : When people respect us, we gain the voluntary cooperation of people. We don’t have to use as much of our energy and resources trying to get our needs met. When people respect one another there are fewer conflicts.
Respecting Others Opinion
Opinion can be defined as a thought, a view, or a concept formed in the mind about a particular subject. It’s a conclusion or belief held with confidence but not substantiated by positive proof or knowledge. Because of this, many people are fearful to accept and respect opinions of others.
We all come from different backgrounds and are brought up to believe in different viewpoints. Also, we all are influenced by a number of things, such as our upbringing, our culture, parental views , etc. We have to understand that just because someone has a different opinion than us does not mean that their opinion is wrong. An opinion is not a fact, therefore there is no right or wrong view.
We must respect the opinion of other even if we disagree with them. Because ‘being right’ is very subjective. Just because someone believes in something different does not mean that they should be condemned. We should make everyone feel that their opinion matters as much as others.
Respecting other people’s opinions also shows that we are well mannered and have respect for other people. If someone has a different opinion than ours and we reply with complete positivity rather than replying with our opinion and why our opinion is right and why their opinion is wrong, the other person will respect us in return.
There is an individualistic form of respect also, which is well known as self-respect. Self respect is an essential component for the prosperity of any individual. Self Respect is a recognition of worth of oneself. A feeling of worth and rational judgement gives rise to self respect.
If an individual cannot respect himself, he cannot respect any other person. So it is very important to respect oneself first. A person with low self respect may act as a timid. On the other hand, self respect does not violate the individuality or respect of others. A clear distinction occurs between self respect and ego.
